Ozzy Osbourne - Randy Rhoads Tribute: Guitar - Vocal
Published in Paperback by Cherry Lane Music (December, 1998)
Author: Mark Phillips
Average review score:

Randy Lives!
A must-have item for anyone who wants to understand exactly how good Randy Rhoads really was. A perfect note-for note transcription of one of Randy's performances (in Detroit, I think) on three sides, and one in England for the final side of the album. Including an incredible solo, not like the one Kevin DuBrow "edited" for the Quiet Riot CD, "The Randy Rhoads Years"

This is it
The Tribute album is really the only piece of music that has really affected my life. The pure intensity and flow of these live recordings gives me goose bumps every time I listen to it, and that's after I've learned virtually every song. This album is truely a masterpiece. Wolf Marshall does a valiant job transcribing Randy's playing. If you want to learn these songs then this is the best book to do that. Randy's live performances really brought all of his amazing talents together, and no show better illustrates this than the Cleveland 5.11.81 show where the majority of Tribute's songs are taken from. In the studio Randy was great; Live Randy is a legend.

Randy Still Lives!
If you're stone cold bored by today's "music" scene, with an endless parade of whining "woe is me" grunge bands (think Pearl Jam/Nirvana), complaining female wannabe poets (think Jewel), David Cassidy/Osmond Brothers retreads (think N'Sync), and shiftless hillbillies hammering out odes to their pickup trucks (think Garth Brooks), you need to get this book NOW! Plug in, crank the volume, and rock out. Listen to Randy's blistering lead playing, brutally crunching power chords (the guy exuded raw power), and his use of weird 'n' crazy phrasings. The man spoke volumes through his mastery of his instrument. In a day and age when "nerd rock (think Bare Naked Ladies)" and grunge bands eschew learning to actually play their instruments, Randy's deft articulation of complex melodies and harmonies still rules!

this romance novel contains no fluffy, sweet sex
A thousand kudos to Jill Phillips. She did an outstanding job of letting a romance novel reader know that there really is good historical fiction out there. She has inspired me to delve deeper into the romance of the era. This book contains no happy ending, but Ms. Phillips took away all the fluff and sweet sex of usual romance novels and replaced it with the reality of life in medievil times. I always thought it would be cool to live in those times, have my knight in shining armor there to save me from the despicable people portrayed in this book. True to the times, everyone used each other, to their fullest ability. How frightening to be a young child in those times. Isabel, who I plan on researching her for factual information, was a classic victim, and I am sure all women were in those times. Chattel. I wish more authors were as conscientious about writing of history, the true lives, making every effort to be as accurate as history allows. This book is for anyone who needs a lift. Despite its depressing contents, you close the book with a sigh, thankful for all you have in this life.

A Haunting Novel
I found myself haunted by this book for weeks after and I had to find out if it were true. All I could find was that Isabelle of Hainault was married to King Philippe when she was 10, gave birth to his heir at 16 and died before she was 20. This is tragic by any standards but the way the book depicts her is even more tragic. She was used by so many men - her father and uncle mostly who (if the book is accurate) were sick. But the book does not depict them that way - incest is seen as common in those days. It is hard to understand her having so many relationships as she was so young. To start at 10, have over 10 pregnancies and then die in childbirth is unbelievably sad. She was a queen but in reality nothing but a victim. Lets hope this book really is purely fictional and the real Isabelle had a much happier life.

Beautiful, Tragic, Very Detailed
Five stars, only because I can't give it ten. This is the best book I've ever read. Although there is a lot of detailed sex, etc., It is still a great book. I had to force myself to put it down. It's long, but well worth it. A very good look at the lifestyles of royals in medival times & the lives of many medival women. Excellent historical detail.

Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Perennials

Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Perennials
I have been using this book as my first reference for including new perennials in my garden for several years. It includes all the information I need to decide what location and care would be appropriate. It is the perfect choice for a beginning gardener who wants to work cooperatively with nature, increase skills in horticulture, and enjoy the results of their landscaping efforts.

Wonderful addition for the new perennial gardener...
Have you reached the point in your gardening career where you'd like to move on from lawns and beds of gaudy annuals to the more refined art of perennial gardening? This guide book provides an overview of what you might consider.

The Rodale press has been publishing ecologically responsible books and magazines for a number of years (at least 30 -- I first subscribed to "Organic Gardening" in the early 1970s). Their committment to promoting environmentally friendly ways to garden is evident in this publication. Sections that will prove most instructive for "green" gardeners cover: 1) pests, weeds, diseases and ecologically sound ways to cope with them; and 2) soil composition and how to improve it with organic materials including compost.

The garden designs found in Section 1 are tricky. In my experience, it is useful to plan a bit, but as John Lennon said, life is what happens when you're making other plans. Most of the designs are a bit complicated for experienced perennial gardeners let alone the new gardeners. Juggling plants for size, color, height, blooming time, soil composition, water, light needs, PH and other requirements is no small task. The authors have presented plant combinations that will work together, but they will not work everywhere. If I was starting out, I'd plant a few perennials and add more as I became confident the first plants were going to make it. Also, many gardeners forget that plants grow. I would start with a combo of perennials, bulbs, and annuals and remove the annuals as the perennials take over.

The authors have provided a good A-Z list of perennials in Part Three of the book (many can survive the blackest thumb for at least one season). None of the plants listed is impossible to find--in fact many can be found in the larger nursery. Whether you can find the colors or type you want is another matter. The authors suggest using seeds for some plants and mail order companies for others. A list of resources (plant and bulb suppliers)can be found in the back of the book.

Since not all plants do well in all areas, you may want to take time to look at other people's gardens and your local botanical gardens before you do anything. Also, many areas have master gardener programs and state agricultural extension services that you may find useful.

My most referenced Garden Book!
I have a library of approximately 80 gardening books, time & again I turn to this beautiful, well written encyclopedia. I purchased it when it first printed & will replace it if anything happens to it! Not only do you find beautiful photographs, but the information is complete as to what to plant nearby, how to feed, prune, divide etc. This book also includes the basic how-to plan & prepare a bed, & some basic garden designs with pictures of how each will look throughout the year. A must have for the beginner to experienced gardener!

Schools for the 21st Century : Leadership Imperatives for Educational Reform
Published in Paperback by Jossey-Bass (October, 1991)
Author: Phillip C. Schlechty
Average review score:

Necessary educational changes for the next century
Five big ideas: 1. A need to redesign our schools: Our society has moved from a simple agrarian society, to an information-based society. Schools began in this country promoting Protestant morality. They later changed, and began promoting the American culture to the immigrant masses. Today, education must change again. Schlechty claims that the educational reform movement cannot further proceed without a clear purpose for schooling in the 21st century. The entire structure on which schools are based must change in order to fit the cultural, economic, and social aspects of the next century.

2. Manual work to knowledge work: In our information-based society, the means of production is based on knowledge and the ability to use it to create and solve problems. Working conditions of the 21st century will require that people be able to work well in groups, exercise self-discipline, and exhibit loyalty while maintaining critical faculties. The workplace needs people who know how to learn. Therefore, curriculum must be treated as material to be processed and worked on by students.

3. Clear purpose = student success: Within a knowledge-based school, the purpose of school is to create knowledge work at which the students will be successful, and that the students learn the skills that society values.

4. Participatory leadership for compelling vision: Ideas are formed by people. It is of little consequence whether the ideas go bottom-up or top-down. The important factor is that the leadership process involves individuals at all levels. People who lend their support wish to feel a part of the change. Everyone must be involved. Everyone must feel connected.

5. Changes can occur if...: a) the nature of the change is conceptualized b) the people who are called on for support who were not part of the conceptualization process must be made aware of it c) feedback is solicited from those not involved and it must be incorporated into the change process d) people are motivated to act in the direction of the! change e) a system of support and training are provided to those involved.

Implications for education: 1. Teachers are the leaders. Site-based management must increase. Participants must feel they are valuable contributors to the system. Teachers will teach each other to make decisions. They must become risk-takers and trouble-makers.

2. All stakeholders must become more conscious of education. Business' success and the success of society as a whole depends upon the people that emerge from the schools. We all have a stake in education.

3. A change of attitude: Schools need to redirect their thinking. What is our current purpose for schools?....student success. We must rethink the way we teach, the way we think about the learners, and the way we view ourselves. Our roles must change. A vision must be created in order to guide those changes.

Ways of creating a vision of a future educational system.
Five Big Ideas and Three ways Schools for the 21st Century: Leadership Imperatives for Educational Reform will help create a vision of a future educational system:

Big Ideas:

1. The purpose of schools must be defined by educational leaders with support from the community. The purpose will reflect the values and commitment of the stakeholders, and shape the goals that schools will pursue.

2. To foster Educational Reform is to foster change. Change in our educational system can be embraced, if there is an understanding of the history of schools evolutionary process. School structure can be reshaped when purpose and vision of schooling are understood.

3. Unless there is a rationale for change, reform will not occur. There are some who believe that "If it isn't broken, don't fix it." Educators must constantly look to reformulate the purpose of schools and create new visions and goals.

4. New visions and goals will be created. Restructuring efforts will consider participatory leadership and followership, accountability and assessment of schools.

5. The creation of a new framework for schooling will address the needs of children and society. Components of the framework include staffing, the distribution of knowledge, and the utilization of time and space, physically and virtually.

Three Implications for the creation a vision of a future educational system:

1. Addressing the five big ideas will raise the collective consciousness of all the educational stakeholders for the need to reform. The process listed above will open our minds to a common vision that can be clearly stated and shared by all the stakeholders.

2. Technology is changing the global workplace. Therefore, technology will be a catalyst for rethinking how we do and redefine school. Becoming digital implies leaving behind an analog and linear approach to an anywhere, anytime, multidimensional approach to learning.

3. Education and schools in the twenty first century must be reinvented and supported by the glo! bal village and must be designed for the betterment of the students, at all age levels.

John M. Marion, Educational Technology Doctoral Student, Pepperdine University

Do what you always done...you'll get what you've always got!
Schools for the 21st Century or... the ABC's of SCHOOL RESTRUCTURING Phil Schlectly What is Restructuring-Schlectly says it this way, If you do what you1ve always done, you get what you always got. Schlectly says that altering the existing rules, roles and relationships must change from the classroom to the superintendent of schools. Change what you do. We could never have gotten to the moon if we spent time refining the combustion engine. We expect 95% of Kids to do what 5% used to do. How to restructure? 1. Develop a shared understanding of the problem 2. Create a shared vision 3. Focused school activity on students. ASK THIS QUESTION EVERYDAY Is there anything here we did today that will harm kids? ALSO ASK THIS QUESTION EVERYDAY Is there anything here we did today that helped kids? 4.Create a results oriented management system. What results do we want is the answer to all questions.Typical statement is we must reduce class size...What's better is results orientated. The results we are after is more personal attention from adults to children. 5.Ensuring a pattern of participatory leadership - It1s easier to make decisions by myself than to give decisions to staff. Why should we adopt this participatory model? Schlechty's analogy! SHEEP Must have dog barking and bitting- sheep move only in big flock, follow the one making most noise-very dumb-will find a green field and stay for life-Very unionized-week leadership-move from behind ! CHICKENS Can1t be herded- only way to get them to move is by beingthe one they are familiar with-the one who feeds them-Very independent-don1t move from behind-only way to move chickens? Be the one who feeds them, walks by and they follow! Schlechty also gives this analogy "CANARYs in the mine are like AT RISK students in the schools. They1re just die a little earlier. Our schools were built and structured around the game of monopoly, read rules, get the advantage- The problem is kids are playing nintendo-You learn rules by playing the game. You quickly share information -Networking answers to new level of problems will benefit the player. Schlechty defines the different models of schools out there. A School can be a Tribal Center, a Factory or a Hospitals. Schlechty defines knowledge work and that it is what should be the core curriculum of schools. Performance Evaluations =People know what is expected by what is inspected and what is respected. The key steps to moving forward on reform is defined through the superintendents role. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT CHAPTER!

Secret Fantasy (Harlequin Temptation, No 836)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (June, 1901)

Average review score:

I'm Hooked
I am hooked on this series! Carly Philips has created an unbelievable setting and then allowed the reader to find the things that make it all seem possible. This is not a book where you will sit back and say, that could happen to me, but it is a book where you will sit back and say - wow! i wish that could happen to me!

Sexy and Seductive
Do *you* have a secret fantasy?

I do. But it's better left secret. Instead, I'm content to read and enjoy the stories in Harlequin's Fantasies, Inc. series. Carly Phillips' entry, SECRET FANTASY, is no exception.

Reporter Doug Houston's fantasy is to become part of Juliette Stanton's fantasy. Along the way, he hopes to uncover the real reason she fled her wedding and re-establish his credibility as a reporter after a bad lead wreaks havoc with his professional integrity.

Juliette Stanton, aka Runaway Bride, is desperate to find some peace and quiet. Away from the media hounds that smell the scent of scandal and will stop at nothing to ferret out the truth behind her run from a marriage to an influential politician. Little did she know that that the dark-haired charmer selected to play the key role in her fantasy was only after one thing: Her story. But as Doug gets to know Juliette better, he realizes there is more to life than 'a story.' And along the way, both learn to follow their hearts.

I've been a fan of Ms. Phillips for a long time and SECRET FANTASY didn't disappoint me. Her characters (who come alive with real problems and real dialogue) work to overcome the odds, culminating in a fulfilling and satisfying ending. Fans will be happy to learn that this author has an upcoming entry in the Blaze! Sexy City Nights series, titled Body Heat. I was lucky to have received an advance reading copy and can only say that if Body Heat is any indication of the quality of the new Blaze! imprint, then readers have much to look forward to.

Fantastic fantasy
Chicago Tribune reporter Doug Houston comes to Fantasy, Inc. to allegedly atone for a story he wrote based on a tip from a girlfriend that proved false. He believes the reason Juliette "The Runaway Bride" Stanton jilted her fiancé is because she found out Stuart Barnes was money laundering. However , it turns out he has no real proof and his reputation is on the line. He tells Merrilee Schaefer-Weston that he needs to make it up to Juliette. Merrilee accepts him as a client because she sees the opportunity for Doug to learn that humans make mistakes and still can share a happy ever after.

Juliette, daughter of a senator, flees to the Florida Keys Fantasy Island to escape the relentless grilling of the media who want to know why she dumped Stuart just before the ceremony. Doug lied to Merrilee as he believes Juliette knows that Stuart is involved in illegal activities and that she can clear the reporter's reputation. However, on the Key, Juliette and Doug begin to fall in love, but he surely is only using her for his own gain.

The second tale in the Fantasies, Inc. series holds up against the strong debut story (see SEDUCTIVE FANTASY by Janelle Denison). By doing so, Carly Phillips places geometrically increased pressure on the next author Julie Kenner to keep the quality level high. The story line is heated entertainment as the lead characters come to the Keys with their own needs, but leave with much more just as readers will too due to Juliette hooking the audience and even that rat Doug gains empathy. This passionate temptation will not stay secret as fans will relish the second trip to fantasy island.

A must-have for researchers in SWB
Although the book tackled a lot of material pertinent to Attitude and Personality Measurement, I find it really useful in my research-interest in Subjective Well-Being (SWB). A chapter was dedicated to SWB, it's theories, tests and development. It is a really must-have book for those interested in SWB.

Recommend
If you are teaching research courses this book you want to have in your test library.

Parenting, Sports Mom Style: Real-Life Solutions for Surviving the Youth Sports Scene
Published in Paperback by Three Hundred Seven Books (01 September, 2000)
Authors: Laurel Phillips, Barbara Stahl, and Kevin Ewing
Average review score:

Sports Reference for Beginning Sports Parents
As a mother of a 9-year-old hockey player/fanatic, I picked up this book for the nutrition section for athletes. I enjoyed the easy-to-read style of the book, but felt that it was a better book for beginner athletes and their parents.

Being a parent means that we have to help our children make good choices in every area of their lives. This book covers the portion involved in the youth sports arena that can get very competitive and overrated. It gives hints for all age levels and offers very good advice for busy parents. Overall, I felt that this was a great book for parents entering into the sports scene. Other parents that have been involved with sports for many years will enjoy the book but will need to look elsewhere for more detail on their particular sport(s) of choice.

A fun, easy read. Enjoy!

A great book for SportsMoms by SportsMoms
If you are parent with a child who is ready for organized youth sports, you really should take the time to prepare yourself for what lies ahead. Whatever sport your child is considering, check out the new SportsMom book Parenting SportsMom Style-Real-Life Solutions for Surviving the Youth Sports Scene. This book can help you deal with the every day demands that SportsMoms everywhere must face. It will help you to use your child's sports experience to shape his or her character, values and relationship with you and with others. Especially significant is the chapter entitled "What You Should Expect From Your Child (and What Your Child Should Expect From You) which lists some of the more common complaints kids make, along with the life lessons that can be learned from these problems and how parents might help their child learn from the experience. As a long time youth coach, I found the advice given in chapter 8, The Coach and You, right on the mark. Parents and coaches both can benefit from the guidance offered in this chapter regarding a coach's authority, the importance of good coach/parent communications, the issue of kid's playing time and how parents should handle disagreements with the coach. I would suggest that SportsDads could also benefit from the information and advice these SportsMom offer. This book, as well as the SportsMom Manuals on Volley Ball, Soccer and Hockey also by SportsMoms Laurel Phillips and Barbara Stahl, can help make the world of kids' sports a far better and more enjoyable place. I hope that the world will read and benefit from their words of wisdom....

A Great Gift for Sports Mom Wannabes
Being a new mother of an energetic 6 month old boy, I want to be prepared for the time when my son might say, "I want to play (name your sport)" or "I want to quit (name your sport)." Instead of picking up a thick, comprehensive literature on youth sports medicine and psychology, I decided to start with this sensible, humorous guide. Because of its straight forward brevity, even a parent of an infant can finish it before s/he turns into a toddler. If that isn't quick enough, the comical illustrations depict the profound messages. The authors stress the importance of teaching children and sports moms the "Lessons in Life" through sports. I would love to see them write one for sports dads and coaches.

The Red Woman and Water Lilies

Author: Jennifer Phillips
Average review score:

From an Avid Reader
I thought this was an excellent novel. The detail in the book made the images come alive in my mind, and the characters were well fleshed out. They were the kind of people that are actually walking around, far from perfect yet incredibly compelling. They were just far enough away from the fairy tale story that one minute I would side with one, then the next, I would be behind another. I found myself rooting for everyone, even when I knew perhaps there was no way everyone could come out on top, especially with all the love triangles. I would reccomend this because I think it reminds us that sometimes we think we know our own hearts, and others hearts, but really, we just need to keep searching, and listening to what really is going on inside of ourselves. Anyone that has been in love, been out of love, been lonely, been scared, been through that soul searching kind of moment will be able to identify with these characters and this story.

Wonderful
This book is for anyone who is looking for intrigue and surprise, but most of all, if you're looking to do a little soul searching, this is for you too! While not classified as a mystery or suspenseful novel, The Red Woman and Water Lilies sure will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Happiness Can Sometimes Be Found Right in Front of You
This novel is packed with vivid descriptions of life as it was during one of the most exciting times in American history. Each word appears to be selected carefully to allow the reader to imagine that they are actually there at that time, with that person. If you have time to read the book slowly, you can savor each phrase. The book keeps you interested in finding out more about each character and what will happen next. It is a book to be enjoyed by the reader. When you read this book(and you should), it makes you feel good about how good life can be if you follow your heart. The author has a deep insight into people. This is her first published novel, however, there are more on the way. I shall look forward to reading more of these works in the future.

The Reluctant Agent
Published in Paperback by Washington Writers Pub House (14 September, 2001)
Author: Phillip Kurata
Average review score:

A novel of striking insight and power.
"The Reluctant Agent" is Phillip Kurata's first novel, but in its lean, evocative writing and uncluttered structure, you'd never guess it was the work of a first-timer. In leading Habib ben Hamed, a feckless Tunisian intellectual, to his inexorable fate during the political unrest of the 1960s, Kurata brings home two major truths: that in times of injustice, the war between conscience and personal safety is usually unwinnable; and that revolutions eat not only their young, but anyone in their paths. Kurata has been compared with Graham Greene and Albert Camus; in his detailed insight into how dictatorships work, he obviously knows his Orwell and Arthur Koestler as well. In its persuasive portrayal of the collision between modernism and traditional Islam, "The Reluctant Agent" is urgently pertinent reading in 2002. The deceptively simple yet compelling story keeps you turning the pages to the final paragraph, which is breathtaking in its lethal spareness. "The Reluctant Agent" is a must-read for anyone interested in the literature of revolution and politics.

Significant New Work
Phillip Kurata's vivid prose style and deep sociopolitical insight capture the essential conflict of post-colonial Tunisia; but more than that this spectacular literary debut speaks to an eternal question confronted by every man and woman: How do I live truthfully and what price do I pay for compromising my integrity? Kurata makes these costs explicit through richly drawn characters and the consequences their actions bring about. This novel succeeds because, unlike so much contemporary fiction, it possesses a moral center that pulls the reader into the lives and locale of a distant yet all too familiar place. It is fair to compare "The Reluctant Agent" to works by Lampedusa, Hemingway, Koestler and Solzhenitsyn. I hope there will be an encore performance.

Kurata is on the mark.
Anyone who ever spent time in a third world country in the post colonial cold war era will recognize the characters and settings in Phillip Kurata's The Reluctant Agent. The country is Tunisia shortly after its independence and Habib Ben Hamed is caught between his own world and that of the former French colonizer. Unfortunately Habib is at home in neither and becomes caught up in a postcolonial drama he cannot fully comprehend nor control. The political rhetoric is of socialism and progress but the reality is that of power and domination as the world of the colonizer gives way to that of the local ruling class.

Reminiscent of Graeme Green's best work Kurata draws the reader into a rich psychological world of men and women caught up in historical forces that sweep them along to inevitable endings. The exotic settings of North Africa, colorfully described in clean declarative prose, amplify the inner turmoil of a hapless Habib caught between his heart's desire and the cruel reality that denies it.

My own postcolonial third world experience was in Somalia at the end of the cold war but the settings and characters differed little from those described in Kurata's novel. I saw many Somalis draw sustenance from their former colonizer's culture even as they moved quickly to their own destruction crushed between the early socialist rhetoric of their postcolonial freedom and the twin barbarisms of dictatorship and cold war politics. Many of today's headlines stem from the cold war and postcolonial issues still unfolding in developing countries. Thus, Habib's dilemma is as relevant today as it was twenty to twenty-five years ago. Kurata, who lived in Tunis, saw to the core and created a world that allows the rest of us to see it too.
